For example, you could write about your experience in one of the U.S. National Parks, about your hobby as an outdoor enthusiast, about your skills as an outdoor leader, or about your interest in caring for the environment. Or, you could write about your knowledge about a particular park, such as a recent renovation or upgrade.Another idea for an angle could be to write about aspects of the business side of operating the National Parks, such as managing finances, accounting, fee-for-service payments, salaries for Park personnel, or operations to support National Parks.Sample One-Page NarrativeBelow is sample content for the one-page narrative for this vacancy announcement. The narrative should explain why the applicant wants to apply for this particular internship.Dear Ms. Jones,I am applying for the Pathways Student Internship Program in Washington, DC at the Department of the Interior. I am available to work full time for three months. I am a full-time high school student at Catonsville Senior High School, and I can take the three months off from classes in order to work an internship during my senior year.I have a passion for National Parks, indigenous species, and Department of the Interior programs to support parklands, species, and provide interpretive programs for the public. I would love the opportunity to understand the mission, environmental concerns, and operations of National throughout the US.While on vacation last week, I visited the new National Park Kealia Pond Interpretive Center Pond in Maui, Hawaii. Kealia is famous for managing the indigenous species Pink l eg Birds and the Coots in Maui. After reviewing the interpretive signs in the building, I drove to the ponds to see the birds. The park ranger said there are about 1,500 of the pink leg birds at the pond. However, very surprisingly, there were no other visitors there, and I could only find 6 birds total. The water is disappearing there, and I would be curious to know more about the Pond and the birds. There is a small street sign for the new National Park on the main road. The Park Ranger told me that she was hired to increase community interest in the Pond, the Pink Leg Birds and the new facility. I will be interested to see how it goes for the Kealia Pond in Maui. I can see all kinds of challenges there funding, lack of water, where are the birds, where is the water, community interest (so far, very little), costs for the facility, and general boredom for the staff. For the Pathways Student Internship in the Office of the Secretary, I can offer you the clerical, administrative, com puter, communications, scheduling, and research skills that you require for the Office Automation position. As a senior in high school, I am maintaining a GPA above 3.1, and my outside activities include drama and photo club.I live in Baltimore and can take the Marc Train to DOI everyday. This would be a wonderful opportunity for me to fulfill my high school student internship, learn about DOI, and open doors for public service careers for my future. I look forward to your response soon.Thank you for your consideration.Sincerely, Chris ThompsonFinding More Pathways Internships on USAJOBSOnce you have completed one Pathways Student Internship application, the next one will be much easier. Internships With the Ford FoundationInternships With the Ford FoundationThe Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice offers paid internships for college students from the New York City area who likely lack the financial resources to accept unpaid internships. Foundation president Darren Walker wrote in a 2016 New York Times op-ed that unpaid internships favor those who already are economically advantaged. listing volunteer work on a resume

listing volunteer work on a resume listing volunteer work on a resume A reader writesI am currently doing freelance consulting to make a little extra money (and I mean little) and keep my resume active while I am job hunting. I also do extensive volunteering, but some of that volunteering has turned into more substantive program development and outreach that I am proud of, and I am even referred to as a consultant by some of the organizations (although, alas, unpaid at this point). My question is Is it appropriate to list this unpaid consulting experience on my resume together with my paid gigs as a freelancer without mentioning the monetary distinction, or does protocol demand that I keep the two separate or identify it specifically as volunteer, even though they are both equal in terms of utilizing my skills and resources to help make good things happen for people? For some reason, I get the queasy feeling that some prospective employers will think I am resume-padding if I also hig hlight my unpaid freelance achievements along with my paid ones, although I would be more than willing to disclose this in the interview process. This is particularly true for the dreaded online application forms that ask for beginning and ending salary. And maybe it is my own insecurity talking here, but do you think that prospective employers might devalue my unpaid work (no matter how substantive) when considering me as a candidate? I dont want to be disingenuous on my resume about paid vs. unpaid work, yet I dont know if I have to make such sharp distinctions, either, if I dont have to. I just feel that, even in the non-profit world that is supposed to be more progressive, people sometimes still judge you on how much you make, or dont. How to handle this?I think its fine to lump the the volunteer work in with the paid work. As an employer, the only concern Id have here is whether the organizations you were donating your time to were holding the bar lower/holding you less account able since your work was free. But thats pretty easy to address, by focusing on accomplishments in your resume, rather than just listing duties.Your accomplishments are your accomplishments. Its no ones business how much you got paid for them, even if that amount is zero. But perhaps it would help to think of yourself as taking on pro bono work rather than a volunteer. And by the way, Im glad youre listing this stuff. Sometimes in the course of an interview, it comes out that someone has highly relevant experience that they left off their resume because it was volunteer and so they thought it didnt count. It counts.

How to conquer expectations and live the life you love

How to conquer expectations and live the life you love How to conquer expectations and live the life you love Your glass is not empty or full; it’s already broken.“You see this goblet?” - asks Achaan Chaa, the Thai Buddhist master.“For me, this glass is already broken. I enjoy it; I drink out of it. It holds my water admirably, sometimes even reflecting the sun in beautiful patterns. But when I put this glass on the shelf and the wind knocks it over or my elbow brushes it off the table, and it falls to the ground and shatters, I say, ‘Of course.’When I understand that the glass is already broken, every moment with it is precious.”Expectations cause us suffering - pretending that things will go our way creates unnecessary stress.Life is like a fragile glass - it will break sooner or later. Rather than expecting things to happen your way, enjoy them for what they are and while they last.Expectations drive deception“Deceiving others. That’s what the world calls a romance.” - Oscar WildePeople tell me that, sometimes, they feel they are living someone else’s life. Like something is missing. That’s because they allow other people to determine their choices.Social pressure is deceiving - we can quickly lose control of our lives without noticing it.Your boss, partner, friends, parents and more have expectations - they don’t see you for who they are. They observe the gap between who you are and what they want you to become. To overcome expectations, we must maintain ownership of our choices.Pleasing other people is like chasing a moving target. Everyone has different hopes for you. Social pressure is fluid - people will continually change their expectations toward you.Expectations are an illusion. By trying to please everyone, we end pleasing no one - ourselves included. That’s why most people don’t live the life they want. Everyone feels frustrated and disappointed. That’s why it’s better to expect the unexpected - accept the glass will break.Anticipation is boring - even when things go as expected, we can’t enjoy unsurprising event s.Even the few times we get what we wished for, we cannot be happy either. That’s the problem with anticipation - we experience things before they happen. We fall in love with the expectations. If what we anticipated doesn’t come true, we feel life is unfair. If it happens, then the lack of surprise makes the actual experience less exciting. The same happens with people. They expect you to behave in a particular way, but when you fail you to do so, they get frustrated. If you do please their expectations, they will have new hopes for you.Expectations are pushy influence“Don’t walk in my head with your dirty feet.” ? Leo BuscagliaPeople tend to make decisions based on how others expect them to perform. Others can help us raise or lower our bar. Most people try to fulfill other’s expectations to gain respect and appreciation.People who believe in you can stimulate you, or the other way around. However, what happens when their intentions don’t align with your desires? When people fail to live up to your expectations, it’s not their fault. Similarly, people’s expectations are theirs; you have no obligation to fulfill them. Pushy influence always creates disappointment. In Mind over Mind, Chris Berdik explains how anticipation can inform, even dictate, our future experiences. The science journalist reveals how our forward-thinking brain shapes our actions and perception He describes tricked wine tasters who rejected and later rewarded an identical vintage based on a higher price tag.Berdik also uncovers the downside of expecting too much, such as when star athletes fall apart at a crucial moment. Similarly, people who watched an uplifting movie were deceived by their expectations. Those who had earlier read about the benefits of joy felt less happy after watching the film than those who hadn’t.Aiming for the best is not the problem - our attachment to concrete expectations is the issue.Dalai Lama said, “Attachment is the origin, the root of suff ering; hence it is the cause of suffering.”When our expectations are unrealistic, they turn into a bigger problem. Like hoping that a glass will never break. That’s why we should expect the worst and aim for the best. You have expectations of others. And others stack expectations on you. Some are more realistic than others.Believing that unspoken expectations will bring you what you want is unrealistic. Expecting your colleagues to do what is in your interest, but not theirs is unrealistic. To think that merely communicating your expectations is going to get your children to follow the rules is also unrealistic.Expecting others to do what is in both of your interests can be realistic.People expect you to be someone else“I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.” ? Bruce LeeMany people bear resentment when the outcome of an event is less than they imagined it would be, even if their expectation was based on unrea listic assumptions. The gap between what people expect from you and who you are makes everyone frustrated. To bridge that void, you must reframe your relationship with people’s expectations. Not expecting things from others is the first step towards preventing people from dictating how you live.Life is reciprocal - when you realize no one owes you anything, you won’t expect people to owe you anything either.Expectations create a social contract - it’s an implicit agreement between others and you. If you don’t push back, people will assume you are okay with it.That’s why people invade our lives. When they don’t see any resistance, they keep moving from a beachhead to conquer your entire life. Some do it on purpose - they love controlling other’s lives. Others do it because they are merely reacting - their behavior reflect what others do to them.Regardless of people’s intentions, it’s up to you to overcome their invasion. Speak up.If you don’t resist, not only yo u legitimize the agreement, it becomes a social practice. Soon, you’ll start doing the same to others - when you let other people define your life, you want to prescribe theirs too.How to defeat expectations1. Put your oxygen mask first: The first step to getting rid of expectations is to treat yourself kindly. To take care of others, you have to put on your oxygen mask first - address your needs before attend people’s desires.Accepting yourself as you are (flaws included) is the foundation for a long-term friendship. When we accept who we are, there’s no room for pushy influence.Being self-compassionate is like fresh oxygen to your mind.Research by Dr. Kristin Neff shows that compassionate acts towards ourselves release the ‘feel good’ hormones. Increased levels of oxytocin make us feel comforted, calm and connected.2. Adjust the Way You Think You cannot control what others think about you, but you can choose how you talk to yourself. Your inner-talk can help or harm you, as I wrote here. Learn to choose your words wisely. You are the best person you can talk to.Pay attention to your inner-dialogue, are you being kind to yourself or adding more pressure? Does your conversation focus on who you are and what you want to be? Or is it full of expectations of who you should be? Your dialogue should be yours, not shaped by other people’s thoughts.3. Speak Up People need limits - some because they are acting without noticing it, others because they tend to impose their desires. Speak up. Don’t let them dictate who you are and what you should do.People will assume the social contract is active unless you explicitly break it.Learn to draw a line. You don’t need to be harsh though. Just let others know when they are out of bounds - not everyone realizes when they are trying to define how you live.4. Free Yourself and Free Others When you remove your preconceptions and expectations, you can do the same to others. Living the life you love is liberating - you don’t feel the pressure to please others. Similarly, you won’t need to impose your will on others either. When you take ownership of your life, people feel empowered to follow suit.Expectations are an illusion - they add useless pressure to everyone. Let’s recover the joy of living. Remember when you were a kid. You probably didn’t have time for expectations - you were busy enjoying life one-minute at-a-time.5. Stop Judging, Stop Expecting Expectations derive from being judgmental - when someone can’t accept how you behave, they expect you to change. By learning to be more compassionate toward yourself, not only you’ll ease your own expectations, you won’t feel the need to judge others.Life is not perfect - removing expectations will let you appreciate your life as is.Judgment adds frustration and negativity - perfectionists are never happy. When you let go of expectations, you create space to enjoy the here and now. Your life is not what it should happen, but what is happening as you read this post.- - - Removing expectations doesn’t mean lowering your bar but letting go of unnecessary pressure. Only when you feel relaxed, you can give your best.Learn to see the glass broken.Enjoy things while they last, and be okay when they break. Living without expectations requires accepting the worst and aiming for the best. And that applies to what people expect from you too. This  article  first appeared on Medium.

5 Signs a Career Breakthrough Is Just Around the Corner

5 Signs a Career Breakthrough Is Just Around the Corner 5 Signs a Career Breakthrough Is Just Around the Corner “A sudden, dramatic, and important discovery or development.” This is the dictionary’s definition of a breakthrough. Much like crossing a new scientific barrier, you can and will have a “career breakthrough.” There will likely be a promotion , project, or opportunity at work where you will realize that it was the moment that had the most significant contribution to your career path. It might be a key conversation, a pay raise , new project or new responsibilities you take on. If you’re wondering whether or not you’ve had your career breakthrough yet, that probably means you haven’t had it. You would know if you had a breakthrough because it would be a very significant event. Here are some signs to pay attention to that mean it’s just around the corner. Boredom isn’t always a negative. In fact, it might just mean that you don’t have enough on your plate or don’t feel you are fully being utilized. If you’re feeling bored at work, it’s time to take on a challenging project, which might be the shining moment that ends up leading to your promotion. Or, your manager might be noticing that the work is too easy for you, so you’re likely to earn more responsibilities. “If you’re feeling stuck, suppressed, or simply bored at work, know that this might just be the beginning of an exciting career journey,” says Laura Garnett, Performance Specialist and Author of “The Genius Habit.” “While hitting the metaphorical wall isn’t enjoyable in the moment, it will lend you a sense of urgency and a newfound resourcefulness to finally figure out your next big move and go for it. 2. You are curious about your boss’s job Do you find yourself asking your boss about their day-to-day or wanting to understand all the ins and outs of their role? Are you admiring their work ethic and feeling inspired by their management skills and communication? This doesn’t mean you want to take their job, but rather, it’s more a sign that you are interested in a higher position â€" and this curiosity is a reflection of your drive, which your boss is sure to notice too. You’re putting in extra hours, staying late and the first to jump on any projects that need extra help. You constantly make yourself available to coworkers and you’re the first one in the office each morning. If you feel extra motivated these days to crush the job and take on any challenges that come your way, it’s a sign you’re moving forward towards something bigâ€"which is why your boss has probably trusted you with more tasks or is coming to you first for your opinion and ideas. “You’ll know it’s time to break through in your career when you find that you’re not afraid of hard work,” explains Garnett. “You’re willing to get your hands dirty now if it means remarkable results in the end.” If you find yourself in a meeting and your boss continually name drops you or references your work or ideas, it’s definitely a sign that a promotion or raise is on your way. If your boss has your back, it’s a sign they are likely talking you up to any higher-ups because they have you in mind for a specific role or project that’s about to open up. Moreover, if you feel like everyone at work is talking about you, it’s more likely a good sign than a bad one. If it were something bad, you would know. Instead, try to focus on the positive side here: if everyone is buzzing about your work, it means you are standing out. 5.  You have been investing in yourself Work-life balance is hard to attain at any point. But if you feel you are getting close to a solid balance, it may mean you’re close to a breakthrough. You’ve been working hard, but you’ve also been taking the time to invest in yourself either through additional classes, starting a side hustle or simply taking the time you need to recharge. That awareness is a sign that you know what you’re doing with your life, or have been moving closer and closer to your biggest dream. “Whether you are on the brink of a career breakthrough or not, the best way to get started is to get to know yourself,” says Garnett. “Focus on figuring out your innate genius and purpose in life. Observe how your strengths - and resulting engagement - manifest at work, and start making strategic moves that better align who you are with what you do.”

How to create a personal brand to enhance your job search

How to create a personal brand to enhance your job search How to create a personal brand to enhance your job search These days the term “branding” means so much more than what comes to mind when you think of a particular company or product. Brands, in the traditional sense, of course still exist, but in this day and age of social media importance, it’s more critical than ever for individuals to brand themselves, as well. Developing your own personal brand doesn’t have to be intimidating, though. Just a few simple steps can help you narrow down the best approach, which will hopefully help you land your dream job. Here’s how to create a personal brand that will  enhance your job search:  Define your brandYou might think that “writer,” “illustrator,” or “content creator” is enough of a personal brand, but really, those are just job titles. To develop your actual brand, you’ll need to put a little more thought into what it is that you actually create (or hope to create) on a daily basis with your work. For example, perhaps as an illustrator you’re well known for your quirky car icatures, or as a writer you’ve really cornered the market on crypto-currency, international travel, or single parenting. Whatever it is you’re best at in your particular job, own it and flaunt it in every way possible. This could mean developing a brand statement, getting new headshots that drive home your specialty, re-writing your resume to really showcase those particular talents, or, likely, all of the above.Do a social media overhaulEveryone has embarrassing photos from back in the day when they first joined Facebook, but since Facebook is about so much more than just connecting with old friends these days, it’s time to  do an overhaul of your profile to ensure it’s professional  and on-brand. It’s not just Facebook that needs updating, though- be sure to check in across all of your social media sites (Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.) to ensure there isn’t anything embarrassing that you wouldn’t want potential future employers to see. After that’s done, cons ider updating your sites so that it’s clear what your new brand is across all platforms. This could mean uploading your new headshots, adding your brand tagline, sharing your new work, or starting conversations with others in the same field. A good rule of thumb is to do a Google search for yourself, and whatever comes up that you have access to, change it so that your brand is front and center.Fill in any holesIt’s not enough to just have a LinkedIn profile that showcases your professional brand these days, you should really consider having multiple online places for people to find you.  If you don’t already have a professional website, create one.If you aren’t on Facebook, great! Start a new page with only your professional brand and goals in mind. Also consider checking on other networking platforms or job forums where you can upload your new resume and share your new brand-oriented social media sites for potential new projects and jobs.Check back in, frequentlyDeveloping a personal brand  isn’t a one-and-done process, it’ll require constant upkeep and checking in. The more you interact on your new brand-conscious social media sites, the more likely you will be to cash in on new opportunities. That means you should try to post to your Twitter and Facebook feeds at least daily (multiple times a day is even better), and always share your own work, as well as the work of others that you find interesting or that is in line with your own brand objectives and goals. This article first appeared on FlexJobs.

4T0X2 - Histopathoogy - AFSC Description

4T0X2 - Histopathoogy - AFSC Description 4T0X2 - Histopathoogy - AFSC Description Medical analysis is constantly being performed in any hospital situation. The specimens that go to the lab for study will often yield the causes to certain illnesses. The medical professionals that perform histopathology are laboratory technicians inspecting tissue samples from autopsies, biopsies, swabs, and other medical testing samples and result in what is known as an autopsy report, a biopsy report,or pathology report. This specialty code will assist the pathologist in interpreting the samples and reports. In order to provide first-rate medical care often requires specialized examination to occur behind the scenes. Responsible for preparing tissue for examination, Histopathology specialists help with essential diagnosis of the diseased samples. These technicians work in hospital labs performing various duties that range from maintaining laboratory instruments to assisting pathologists to perform autopsies in pursuit of the medical answers needed to treat patients. How important are these specialists? Many of the prognoses are gathered from such detailed examination of the tissues. These may include cancerous tumors, tumor type and grade, and extent of spread. Then the pathologists and surgeons make a determination on whether or not the cancer can be fully removed with a margin of healthy cells surrounding it. IShow Entry Aims to Improve Basketball Training

IShow Entry Aims to Improve Basketball Training IShow Entry Aims to Improve Basketball Training Business and engineering students at Brigham Young University are collaborating on a unique basketball training system that uses motion sensors and other devices to automatically track shots and provide instant feedback, allowing a player to monitor performance. BYU will bring its technology concept to Indianapolis and the 7th Annual ASME Innovation Showcase (IShow) on June 22, where the student team will compete with nine other finalists in an exhibition of creativity, technical ingenuity, innovation, and entrepreneurial and business acumen. The IShow will be held in conjunction with the ASME Annual Meeting, which takes place June 21-26 at the JW Marriott Indianapolis. Named The Shot Coach, the BYU system consists of three devices - a wristband, an electronic box attached to the backboard, and a smartphone App - operating in unison to track shots and instantly transmit data to the player or coach. The lightweight rubber wristband on the players shooting hand is equipped with advanced sensors that track the position of the wrist throughout the motion of a shot. We have designed the wristband with a digital compass and other advanced sensors that reconstruct the exact orientation of a players wrist in the process of shooting, said Josh Bennett, a mechanical engineering student at BYU and member of the six-person team presenting at the ASME IShow. The wristband also keeps information on the players position anywhere on the court. The box mounted to the rim on the backboard contains a motion sensor that tracks successful shots, as well as an accelerometer that keeps track of the unique vibrations of both rim and board on missed shots. Sometimes, shots are missed because they are too strong and other times because they come up a little short, Bennett explained. Our box monitors all this information. A Bluetooth transmitter in the box wirelessly transmits the information to any smartphone or tablet, allowing the player or coach instantaneous feedback. The Shot Coach App delivers statistics and visual maps on various aspects of every shot, including location on the court, orientation to the basket, and other critical data. The objective of our system is to give the player or coach the kind of feedback that can be applied to improvements in all aspects of the game, from critical decisions to correct form, said Bennett. Although a coach can receive the feedback, the BYU team has created The Shot Coach to make improvement measures accessible to the players themselves. Brigham Youngs marketing strategy targets the youth and high school basketball circuit, which lacks the resources for personal coaches and for the types of expensive high-end analytics employed in collegiate basketball programs and the National Basketball Association. According to Bennett, The Shot Coach will cost around $250. The concept for The Shot Coach was launched in January 2013 by a team consisting of marketing and finance majors, programmers, and electrical engineers.   At the ASME IShow, the students must speak in the language of technology innovators and business entrepreneurs, attempting to convince a panel of successful venture capitalists and intellectual property experts that their system can be designed, manufactured, and sold in the commercial marketplace. The real challenge for the participants in ASME IShow is to design a product or system that demonstrates potential in the broader marketplace, said Thomas Loughlin, the executive director of ASME. ASME IShow is a great test of a students engineering skills and business aptitude.
